If you are a business that entrusts search engine optimization activities to a search engine optimization agency, you must have already asked, or may have checked the meaning of these terms on Google. Well, as a search engine optimization company, several of our clients approached us to clarify some of the “technical” terms used in our reports and recommendations.
To this end, we decided to make it easier for everyone to understand by creating a less technical guide to 10 SEO terms everyone should know.

301 to 302 redirect: A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect of a page, stating that it no longer exists and that it has been moved to another location, to another URL. A 302 redirect is a temporary redirect, which informs search engines that the page does not currently exist for some reason, but will return later. Ask yourself what is different in terms of impact? Well, we recommend that you always use 301 redirects for a simple reason: it is more suitable for search engine optimization than 302 redirects.
404NotFound error: When you or your website visitors see this error, it means that the page no longer exists and has not been transferred to another page. In other words, neither 301 nor 302 redirects are used. If the deleted page has no other related pages to redirect, please use one of the following solutions: 1) Create a 301 redirect to the homepage, 2) Create a creative 404 page so that visitors can choose where to go.
Alt text: This is a description of an image that allows visitors with visual problems to understand the content of the image. Although this may not seem important, it is recommended that every image on the website has an alt text, not only for visitors but also for search engines. It can help them know what the image is about so they can show it in search queries.
Anchor text: The text used on a page that links to another page. Generally speaking, anchor text can be identified by dark blue and underline. It helps search engines and visitors to understand the target page after clicking on the anchor text.
canonicalurl: This is a tag that tells search engines which is the original URL of the page in case the content is duplicated. Often, having duplicate content hurts search engine optimization, however, in some cases, this is not a real problem. For example, in an e-commerce website, the same product can be accessed through different URLs, so the role of standardizing the URL comes. It can make things simple and point out the original URL.
Backlinks: These links appear on other websites and lead to yours. This is one of the most important search engine optimization practices and part of off-page optimization. The number of backlinks on your website shows its popularity. However, be careful, because backlinks obtained in an unethical manner will actually damage your website rankings, rather than benefit from them.
Black hat refers to the improper ranking technique of black hat. The most common tactics considered by search engines to be black hats are spam and keyword stuffing.
Google Panda: Google seems to like animals to name their algorithm updates. Panda is a new version launched in 2011. It prefers high-quality content over low-quality content. In other words, sites with high-quality content have a greater chance of appearing before low-quality content sites in search results.
Google Penguin: Even though penguins are cute and harmless animals, Google Penguins can seriously harm your website. This is also a Google algorithm update, launched a year after the Panda update, and its role is to punish websites that use black hat technology to obtain backlinks.
Google Hummingbird: Not sure if Google is still a search engine or a zoo. Google Hummingbird (googlehummingbird) is another algorithm update launched in 2013 that focuses on understanding the real purpose behind the search query and the exact information required. These 10 terms give you a better understanding of search engine optimization terms and can help you improve the results of your website. However, this is just a basic guide, and, as you know now, search engine optimization is much more than that.
